Notes from the hall

What the light in Chișinău actually did on three days we had booked. Kept here so the next estimate can quote the hour, not a season.

Linden shade on the boulevard

Blue hour on Ștefan cel Mare after rain, wet stone and lit windows.

Bulevardul Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt, October, after a night of rain. The lindens are yellow and the pavement stays dark. We had a brief for a coat, full length, with the trees in the frame. The client wanted the boulevard. At noon the shade is a net. It cuts a face and a cloth into pieces, and it moves. We stood there for ten minutes and moved the call to 08:10 the next morning.

At 08:10 the sun comes along the pavement from the east, under the branches, and the trunks stay in shade. The coat read as one colour. We had about twenty-five minutes before the light lifted into the leaves and the net started again. Four frames from that window are in the edit. The rest were the net, and they were thrown out on the drive home to Armenească.

Trolleybus wires cross the upper third. We leave them in. They are the street. We crop shopfronts, because a letter in a window becomes the subject whether you meant it to or not. The blue-hour frame on this page was a test the evening before, with nobody in the coat. It stayed in the studio journal. It was not in the delivery.

If you book the boulevard, book the hour. “The afternoon” on that pavement in October is a different picture, and on most days it is the worse one. The diary at the hall now has a line for Ștefan cel Mare: early, or not at all, until the leaves are gone and the low sun can be aimed on purpose.

Two mornings on Strada București

Breakfast table by a worn plaster wall and a tall white window.

A 28-seat room, side window, plaster painted many times. The brief was the table and a short film, same light, for the room’s own page. July in Chișinău is a hard sun. We called 07:10 because by 09:40 the sun hits the zinc on the opposite roof and the glasses pick up a green bounce you cannot grade out without lying about the linen.

First morning, stills. The table moved 70 centimetres back. A flag on the near side. Bread, two plates, one glass. The ceramics are chipped in a way that belongs to the room. We did not replace them with studio props. The second morning was the film. 38 seconds in the delivery. A cook crosses once. We kept the crossing. We did not score it. The cart on the street at 07:30 is part of the tone, and it stays.

Selects went out on the fourth working day. The full stills set, 47 frames, on the ninth. The graded film on the sixteenth. The 47 includes the fork and the plaster. It does not include a group at the table. Nobody asked for one. The room was empty of guests at that hour, which was the point of calling it so early.

The practical note we kept: in July, a dining room with an east or south-east lane window is a morning job, and the morning ends when the opposite roof lights up. Write the stop time on the call sheet. Do not hope the flag will save the last half hour.

The courtyard went grey

A bowl under a single tungsten fresnel in the blackout room.

February in Chișinău, the courtyard at Armenească does not stay white. Snow comes, then it turns to grit, and the daylight hall goes flat. We had a product job on the diary, a set of bowls, colour-critical. At 09:40 we shot a grey card in the hall, looked at it, and moved the job into the blackout room.

The hall stayed held. You cannot put another client in a room that has been paid for, even if the pictures are being made next door. The invoice shows the hold. The pictures came from the blackout room: one fresnel, low, and no panel mixed in. The two colours were not going to agree on a day when the courtyard had already tired our eyes.

33 frames left the studio. The bowls came from a shop on Strada Vlaicu Pârcălab, in a crate, and went back the same day. We did not restyle them. One bowl has a kiln scar. It is in the set, because it is on the bowl.

If the picture depends on the courtyard, look at the month before you hold the date. If it depends on the colour of an object, the blackout room is the honest room from November through March, and often in February it is the only one. Say that in the estimate. Do not discover it at 09:40 with the client already in the court.
